Year 3/4 enjoyed their trip to Mountfitchet Castle on Monday—despite looking like it would rain all day the sun came out for when they arrived. The children enjoyed travelling back in time to 1066 to explore the castle and roam around the Norman village. They enjoyed dressing in clothes of the time, practising medieval calligraphy and experiencing bygone times.

| Party In The Playground - Saturday 22nd September (updated on 04/10/2007 19:32:38) |
I have heard from a number of parents and staff how successful Saturday was and that everyone had a good time. The event raised a considerable amount of money for the school and as soon as I have an amount I will let you know how much. We were very fortunate that the Fire Brigade were able to come and show off their Fire Engine and they have contacted me since to say how polite, courteous and happy the children were and to thank all the friendly parents for their hospitality. I would like to say a big thank you to all of the PTA for organising such a successful event, particularly Vicki Wilkinson and Kate Ward, and to all the parents/carers who came and gave their support. I would like to thank Kate Ward for the following which she has written: 'We couldn't have been happier with the weather as the sun shone down on our third attempt at Party in the Playground. The preparations started early but by one o'clock the playground looked like a majestic dining hall, the jewellery stall was sparkling and the food preparation was well underway. When we opened the doors at three, we were ready for the masses and the fun began. The face painting, jewellery and tattoo stalls had a constant flow of visitors, both old and young with Julie P offering great advice on necklaces to compliment your outfit! The food was served quickly and efficiently and Lizzie had done a fabulous job, the homemade meringues with strawberries and cream were delicious. A great family quiz followed shortly afterwards and we racked our brains to get the answers right. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better a fire engine arrived with lights flashing! The kids couldn’t believe their luck and had a wonderful time climbing into the cab and talking to the fire fighters. The whole evening finished off with raffle prizes and dancing in the playground, a fabulous time was had by all.'

Tom Palmer, the author, visited Foulds school to talk to the year 5/6 boys about his books. Tom writes about football, and they ended the morning with a penalty shoot out in the playground. Great fun! Here is a quote from Ottakars:
"Ottakars barnet were delighted to accompany football writer Tom palmer to Foulds school this morning at part of their ongoing schedule of enhancing reading in local schools.
The boys of year 5/6 at Foulds were treated to morning of football questions and a penalty shoot out all geared at getting reluctant readers into books via magazines and newspapers focusing on their favourite sport!
This was the perfect Pre-World Cup event and we all at ottakars are grateful to everyone involved in making this event so successful.
Tom Palmer's new book is available signed at Ottakars barnet priced at £2.99!" |

For those who enjoyed the chinese food, here are the recipes:
CHINESE GREENS
Kai Lan or Pak Choi Ginger Pepper Garlic Sugar Oyster sauce
Preparation: your job: 1. Wash the greens in cold water. Pull off any nasty bits. Break up any big clumps into smaller clumps – try to get lots of pieces of greens about the same size. 2. Cut the hard outer skin off the ginger. Cut the ginger first into slices and then into strips. 3. Take the papery skin off four cloves of garlic. Cut the garlic up into little bits. 4. Throw away all the bits you don’t need. 5. Put a saucepan of water on to boil ready for the greens. 6. Have a colander ready to strain the greens when they are cooked, and a plate to put them on.
Adult’s job, with your help: 1. Your adult will stir fry the garlic, ginger, pepper and sugar. Add the oyster sauce. 2. Put the greens in the boiling water – when the water comes back to the boil, time 4 minutes. 3. Your adult will drain the cooked greens. 4. You pour the sauce over the greens.
BEAN SPROUTS
Bean sprouts Pepper Soy sauce
Preparation: your job: 1. Wash the bean sprouts in cold water. Pick out any nasty ones and throw them away. 2. Fill a saucepan with cold water and put on the stove. Heat until boiling. 3. Add the bean sprouts, bring back to the boil and cook for about three minutes. 4. Have a colander ready for when the bean sprouts are cooked. 5. Have a dish ready to put the cooked beans into where you can stir the sauce into them.
Adult’s job, with your help: 1. Your adult will drain the cooked bean sprouts. 2. Then your job is to add the soy sauce (try to get a light coating over the sprouts) and pepper, and stir it in well.
CHINESE PRAWNS Prawns Garlic Ginger Spring onions Oyster sauce Pepper Vegetable oil
Preparation: your job: 1. Peel the papery skin off four cloves of the garlic and chop into pieces. 2. Cut the tough skin off the ginger and cut it into slices and then into strips. 3. Wash the spring onions and then cut off any brown bits. Cut each spring onion in half along its length. Then cut each half up into strips about 2cm long. 4. Have the prawns and the oyster sauce ready to add to the wok when you’re ready to cook. 5. Throw away all the bits that you won’t be using. 6. Have a dish ready to put the food onto when it’s cooked.
Adult’s job, with your help: Your adult will heat the oil up in a wok and stir fry the garlic and the ginger. Then you need to give them the prawns to stir fry. Then add the spring onions. Finally add the pepper and the oyster sauce and stir fry a bit longer.
Thanks to Mr Chai from Emchai in Barnet, who told Mrs Browett how to prepare the food and gave us the chopsticks, and to Waitrose in The Spires who kindly donated a large part of our ingredients. Finally, thanks to Mrs Hayhoe who trekked into Chinatown twice to get us our fortune cookies, lychees and lots of other ingredients, and then cooked all day with us!

| Young Shakespeare Company (updated on 21/10/2005 21:23:29) |
MY RECOUNT OF WHEN THE YOUNG SHAKESPEARE COMPANY WORKED WITH US
Two weeks ago all the year 5/6s had the `Young ShakeSpeare company` come in to work with us. They came in because in a few weeks time we are all going to see the play Romeo and Juliet (the play we were doing). It`s being held at Williots in Potters Bar. In the beginning we all sat down in the hall in two lines, then we all met Hayley, who was leading our groups. She talked to us about our parts. I was Benvolio. Next we started playing our parts, it was really fun acting. Some time later it was break time. After an aganising fiteen minities, eventually it was over and we came back in and started acting again. At last Romeo and Juliet commited suicide. We all gave each other a round of applause and then we went back into our class. I really enjoyed it and I can`t wait to see the play. |

| On Friday 23rd September, Theresa Villiers, our local MP, came to school and enjoyed one of our whole school sharing assemblies. The children behaved impeccably (as always!), showed some excellent work, and then some spoke of the visit by some year 6 children to Ravenscroft school, where they saw the Starchaser rocket (the largest rocket to have been launched on UK soil) and even made some working rockets of their own. They went impressively high, apparently! Ms Villiers then told the children what her job as an MP was like, and answered some very penetrating questions, such as “Do you think Tony Blair is doing a good job?” She later sent a lovely letter to the school, saying how much she had enjoyed her visit and how impressed she was with Foulds School. |
